Have you ever looked at something in a magazine or on Pinterest and just thought….I have to make that! More often than not, our second thought is…can I make that? Is it too complicated? Do I have that product? What IS that product? Inevitably, the thought becomes…nah, I can’t make that. It’s too hard. I’m not crafty. I just can’t.
Yes. You. Can. Yes you can!
Most of the time, what stops us from plunging in to try something is simply – a lack of confidence.
A few years ago, I opened the December issue of Martha Stewart Living and my eyes fell on a photo of adorable little pinecone elves. (You’ve seen the photo, I’m sure, gracing many a board on Pinterest and a link to the original craft is here!) I was totally and completely smitten with those cuties, deciding right then and there I was making them! Filled with purpose, I sat down to read through the directions and put together a list of supplies.
Slowly, but surely, the confidence began to ebb. Yes, I craft. A LOT and have for a long time. I do not, however, sew. I have sewn an entire spool of thread to the front of a blouse. Tried to hem a pair of pants and wound up with a tangled ball of fabric that I tossed away in disgust. No, the sewing gene, so prevalent in my family, was not part of my crafting package. How was I ever going to make those darling little elves when sewing was involved?
Well…I took a deep breath, read the directions, read them again, looked longingly at the photo and read the directions once again, just to be sure. I can do this! I’m going to make them as gifts for my co-workers and friends!
Off to the store I went, full of purpose, buying my felt, thread, needles and other supplies. Yes, making the elves took some time, and yes, they took some work, (perhaps I should not have tried to make 30 right out of the gate,) but the end result was so worth it! I used a red and green color scheme for the season, little jingle bells on the hats and added tiny pom poms to the shoes for some personal flare. I did it!
You can, too! Gather up the courage to try something outside of your comfort zone and I just know you will amaze yourself!
There are so many incredible Christmas craft inspirations all around us! What project has caught your eye lately? So….when are you making it? <smiles!!> Let’s celebrate the joy of trying something new!
