Have you ever started a project and it wound up going in a totally different direction? That’s exactly what happened to me with this topiary! I’m don’t know if it’s whimsically cute or just plain weird – but I’m all about brutal honesty, so you’ll tell me!! I’m calling this my Cindy Lou {Who} Spring Topiary because – well, I’d better start at the beginning!
One of the many blogs I love and am always inspired by is Crafts ‘n Coffee. Sharon always features the most amazing projects and I have been crushing on all of the gorgeous topiaries. Why not try a couple to go with my Gimp Trimmed Bunny and do a pink, green and white mantel for Spring, I thought. I wanted to do a yarn tree.
I found this yarn at Michael’s. I loved the bright, Spring green color and thought it was just thick, chunky yarn. Too rushed to put on my glasses and actually SEE what it was – or really maybe it’s vanity that I’m getting older and blinder – I bought my yarn, headed home and settled in to start my tree. So, it’s sort of yarn – but it’s on a really heavy wire, with very thin and very thick sections.
It did not take long to discover this wasn’t going to be like wrapping regular yarn! I scrunched it and pinned, and scrunched it and pinned, on and on until it was covered.
At first, I was a little horrified. If it was blue, I’d swear it was Marge Simpson’s head!
I stared at it. And stared at it some more. Just as it came to me, my daughter walked in and we both said at the same time, “Whoville!”
For whatever reason, many colleagues at just about every place I have worked have wound up calling me Cindy Lou or Cindy Lou Who. All these years, I’ve kind of been too scared to ask why – hopefully it’s the often-worn ponytail and inherent child-like curiosity of everything around me. It sounds good, right? The Grinch definitely stole Christmas, but this Seuss-like, odd little topiary is now my Cindy Lou {Who} Spring topiary. It could be in Whoville for Springtime!
After the 5” Styrofoam cone was wrapped and pinned with the “yarn,” I decided to make flowers similar to those I did in December on the Wreath Package toppers. I cut bright, pink chenille stems in half, and rolled each half into a coiled circle.
To try and give them a bit of dimension, I gently pushed up the centers of the coiled circles.
I love this old box of pearl corsage pins (one of many) from my mother-in law. These are 2″ round. I used them to attach the chenille “flowers” to the tree.
The tree could not be in Whoville in Spring without a topsy-turvy finish, right? I wrapped two chenille stems around a pencil, wired them together at the bottom and stuck it in the top of the tree, pulling one of the curled stems over to the side. I hot glued a flat-backed pearl button at the end of each side of the curled stem, so if you touch it, there’s movement. Boing!
Here’s the Cindy Lou {Who} topiary in all it’s quirky, weird green and pink glory!
So…my friends…weirdly cute or weirdly awful or just plain weird? Does it go on the mantel or just go? You’re deciding this one!
More topiaries to come….heaven help us!
Thanks for stopping by and please leave your comments on whether this is a keeper or a goner! Hope your Thursday is happy!

My friend did a Whoville Christmas theme (for her grandkids) last year. WIth a few minor changes, this would be great…..one on each side of the mantle!
Thanks, Jackie! Dave said I should do one for the other side of the mantel, so it can’t be too bad…you know the guys tell it like it is! Love you for visiting and commenting!
I think it’s fun and funky! Definitely Cindy-Lou-ish! LMBO about the Marge Simpson comment!
Thanks, Danni – it DOES look like Marge’s head when you first look at it, doesn’t it? It looks cute with the bunny and my husband actually said I should make a matching one…and he’s definitely brutally honest! Thanks so much, as always, for your visit!
Oh, My goodness, Cindy ~ this is so precious. I would love for you to share it at Project Inspire{d}!

Thalita, thank you so much! I appreciate your visit and kind comment. Have a great evening!
I really love that! It’s so whimsical looking and the colors are perfect together. I just bought some of that “yarn” this week. So glad you shared this at Project Inspire{d}.
Randi, thanks for much for stopping by! That yarn is kind of fun, even after I discovered the wire. I just got some more in white to do a little one in white-it’s on sale now! I’d LOVE to see what you do with yours! Have a nice Sunday and a great week.
I love the colors & textures of the green yarn. What a fun project that definitely goes into the Dr. Seuss “fun” category
Hope your having a great week!
Thanks, Theresa and thank you so much for the party. Hope you have had a great week and looking forward to the next one!
