No matter where we go for rest, relaxation and time to recharge our personal batteries, vacation is a happy time! While now I’ve traded in my swimsuit, flip flops and T-shirts for real clothes and shoes, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some extended time with my hubby. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with the blog – thank you so much to everyone for your sweet comments and thoughts! I thought I would wrap up the week with a little peak at some of my favorite places and things from my beloved place by the sea – and share my discovery of a special gem on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
First, a heartfelt thanks to a few of my dear blogger friends for their generosity of time, spirit and talent! I was thrilled to have these wonderful ladies as our guests during my vacation and if you missed any of their amazing recipes, you are going to want all of them! Hugs and thanks to Claire, from A Little Claireification, who shared this totally yummy Chocolate Pumpkin Zucchini Bread; Deb, from Cooking on the Front Burner, who shared this beautiful Lemon Caprese Salad; and Lisa, from Cooking with Curls, who shared these fabulous Lemon Curd Sweet Rolls. I absolutely loved having all three of you and cannot wait to make each of your recipes!
While the ladies were wowing you with their culinary talents, I was really a lazy bones in a seaside town that is as comfortable and familiar as my favorite pair of jeans. Ocean City, Maryland, with its ten miles of beach, three mile boardwalk, and choices of food and activities for just about every taste and budget, is filled with cherished memories for me! I spent time there every summer as a child. Mr. Smarty Pants and I took our first vacation together there. My own children put their little feet in the sand for the first time in Ocean City. My first crush happened there! Even though new places to eat, to stay and things to do are introduced each year, I am inevitably drawn back, year after year, to the familiar places and foods that I have loved forever! There is a mixture of comfort, peace and joy in reconnecting – and rediscovering – places and things that are as dear as old friends.
On to some photos! Whatever I had close at hand – my iPhone or my Nikon – is what I used! A lovely sunrise over the Atlantic promises a perfect day by the sea!
Accommodations in town run the gamut from local motels and hotels, to apartments, houses and high-rise condos. We rented a condo on the 19th floor of the Century – and had an amazing view of both the ocean and the bay!
There is a true gem just seven miles away from the beach! I can’t believe it took me this many years to visit the town of Berlin. If you are ever in the mid-Atlantic region, you have to put Berlin on your must-visit list! I fell instantly in love with this enchanting, historic town, which truly has more charm than should be legally allowed! I only wish it had not been so cloudy on the day of our visit.
While Main Street feels as though one has stepped back in time, Berlin has a Hollywood pedigree! It was transformed into the fictional town of Hale, Maryland for the filming of the 1998 movie Runaway Bride with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. In 2001, Berlin was the setting for the movie Tuck Everlasting, with Sissy Space, Ben Kingsley and William Hurt. Fans of Runaway Bridge will recognize the Hotel Atlantic!
I couldn’t resist this sign hanging in Rayne’s Reef Soda Fountain and Grill!
Berlin has art galleries, boutiques, antique shops to restaurants, horse drawn carriage rides, the Spirits of Berlin tour, lots of special events and more. I am thrilled with the antique Mason jars I found at Town Center Antiques!
Back at the beach, the Ocean Gallery on the Boardwalk, is a quirky, can’t miss landmark, where every nook and cranny jam packed with art of all types!
For over 20 years, Christian artist Randy Hofman creates amazing sand sculptures in front of the Plim Plaza Hotel.
I can’t be in Ocean City without one (or four!) visits to Dumser’s Dairyland, which serves the best ice cream ever!
My favorite? A hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream, wet walnuts and of course, a cherry on top!
You can’t go to Ocean City without having breakfast at the General’s Kitchen! Best priced and hands down, best breakfast in town! This is my hubby’s favorite place!
While the sun has set over the bay on another year in “OC,” I packed up more happy memories and of course, a ton of sand, to tide me over until my next visit!
Thanks for letting me share a little peak at my seashore vacation! Please be patient with me as I try to catch up and get back in the groove – I’ve really missed everyone! Don’t forget, tonight is our Best of the Weekend party, kicking off at 8:00 p.m. We’ll be getting into all-out fall mode around here soon and I can’t wait!
Have a happy Friday and a wonderful, winding down the summer weekend!
