It is definitely time to start gearing up for Valentine’s Day! I’m got some new love projects on the way! Today, I want to share a cute Valentine project from the archives that’s a perfect little gift to say I love you to your daughter, sister, mom or friend. My daughter loved her Salt Shaker Angel last year. This doesn’t just have to be for Valentine’s Day – I made my mom a birthday angel. With Dollar Store salt shakers and a few simple supplies, you can whip up a whole chorus of sweet little angels to be special little gifts for Valentine’s Day.
- • Salt shaker
- • Spanish moss or Excelsior
- • Flat-bottomed wooden “head” bead to fit your shaker
- • Filler (Use whatever you like! Beads, ribbon, flowers, bath salts, potpourri…I used tri-acrylic beads in clear and red, plus layered in a few foam hearts)
- • 1” foam hearts
- • 1 piece of 12” x 12” scrapbook paper (I used a piece of the “Blush” Collection from Basic Grey)
- • 1 Silver Tinsel stem or chenille pipe cleaner in the color of your choice
- • Lace trim
- • Ribbon of your choice
- • Fine point black and red markers, pink chalk (optional)
- • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
- • Scissors
- • Craft glue
- • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Take off the lid from the salt shaker and set aside – the lid becomes the halo hat! Fill the salt shaker with your chosen “filler”. I filled this one with a layer of clear beads, a few foam hearts, a layer of red beads, and repeated until filled. Hot glue the wooden “head” bead to the salt shaker.
To make the heart “wings” and get two evenly sized hearts, fold your 12” x 12” scrapbook paper in half and trace a heart with a heart-shaped cookie cutter. I used a cutter that measured 4” across at the widest point. Trace the inside of the cutter; you may need to cut it a bit smaller so the bottom of the wings aren’t too long.
Hot glue your choice of lace trim all around the outer edge on the wrong side of one heart. (Make sure your paper pattern is facing down!) Using craft glue, glue the second heart, pattern facing up, on top of the lace trimmed heart.
This part – well, it gets a little messy! Take a big bunch of Spanish moss or excelsior, put a liberal amount of hot glue all over the top of the wooden head bead and press the bunch of Spanish moss onto the head. Quick, get this angel a stylist! Grab your scissors and give her a nice trim, until she has a “do” you like!
Tie ribbon around the neck into a bow. Hot glue the heart “wings” to the back of the shaker just down the center, and gently push the wings forward a bit.
Hot glue the salt shaker lid to the angel’s head. You can glue the lid at an angle to give your angel a little sass! Make a “halo” as tall you’d like from the tinsel stem, add a little glue to the end and push it into a center hole in the lid. Decorate the halo hat if you want! I add a tri-bead trim and two foam hearts.
Write “Love You” or another sentiment on a foam heart and glue the heart to the front, left side. The little angel is done and ready to deliver your sweet message to someone special!
What do you like to give the special girls in your life for Valentine’s Day?
