Spring Pom-Pom Topiaries

t's time for spring! Fast, easy and fun Spring Pom-Pom Topiaries can be changed up for all the holiday! At littlemisscelebration.comIt doesn’t matter what the calendar says, or the weather people say, don’t you think it’s time for spring? I have this thing for pom-poms; I love making them and using them. On a recent jaunt to Jo-Ann, armed with one of my coupons and a gift card from the holidays, I had to add the Clover Jumbo Pom-Pom maker to my stash. It makes 4 ½ “ pom-poms and I knew immediately what I wanted to make first! These Spring Pom-Pom Topiaries are a fun, easy and great first project for the season. They’re a little bit whimsical but also have some presence! They can be dressed for all the upcoming holidays – I’ve got them ready St. Patrick’s Day.

These topiaries can go in any kind of container you like or have on hand. Originally, I planned to put them in terra cotta pots, but….the good old Dollar Spot at Target never fails me! I snagged these adorable tall, tin buckets in mint green with drizzles of gold. $2.00 total and perfect!

Here’s what I used to make the topiaries:

  • Jumbo Clover Pom-Pom Maker and Clover 2 ½ “ Pom-Pom Maker
  • Two 256-yard packs of Red Heart Soft yarn in Guacamole
  • Two Super Moss Natural Moss Stakes (Pack of 6 from Hobby Lobby)
  • Styrofoam scraps, cut into squares to fit inside of container
  • Small amount of dried moss
  • Low-tem hot glue gun and glue sticks

I made four jumbo pom-poms and two 2 ½ “ pom-poms from the guacamole yarn. I know you’re supposed to “count” the number of times you wind the yarn when you’re making pom-poms, but on these big ones, I kind of got distracted and lost count! I’m estimating that I wound each one about 650 times on each side. I know, it sounds like a lot, but it goes fast and am I weird that I find making them relaxing? Once the pom-poms were finished, I trimmed them a little bit but not too much. I decided to wait until the topiaries were put together and trim them.

I always keep all the extra bits and pieces of Styrofoam from any projects, so I hit up that stash. I cut squares to fit inside the tin buckets. A moss stick was pushed into the Styrofoam in each bucket. The sticks were secure enough that I didn’t even use glue. You could add a bit of Styro-Glue to the sticks to make sure they don’t move.

Next, I found the center of each pom-pom and very gently opened it up just enough that I could slip the pom-poms onto the moss sticks, two large pom-poms and one small pom-pom on each on one. Once I had the pom-poms where I wanted them, I carefully added a bit of low-temp hot glue to the top and bottom of each pom-pom to secure it to the moss stick.

Now, it’s trim time. Honestly, you can keep trimming, and trimming! I tend to get a little carried away with real shrubs AND pom-pom ones. Mr. Smarty Pants had to say, “Put down the scissors and walk away!” Ok, trimming done, I finished by putting a little bit of moss in each pot to cover the Styrofoam.

To dress up the topiaries for St. Paddy’s day, I wrapped the buckets in some pretty, shamrock printed wired ribbon and put a few “gold” coins in the moss. For a little topper, I hot-glued a gold coin to a corsage pin and stuck the pin in the top pom-pom.

How do you like these? I’m tickled with how these turned out! I’m thinking these will go on the table in my foyer and I can’t wait to dress them up for Easter!
