Funny Bunny Jellybean Jars

Funny Bunny Jellybean Jars! Styrofoam balls, felt, glass jars are transformed into little charmers ready to deliver an Easter treat and a smile! From littlemisscelebration.comThis year, I seem to be getting a lot of inspiration from some of my favorite Easter candy! Today, it’s jellybeans! Some foam balls, little jars, felt and some simple craft supplies are transformed into Funny Bunny Jellybean Jars, ready to deliver a sweet treat and definitely some smiles! These little bunnies are just bursting with personality and the best part? They can be refilled and used again and again, bringing some springtime cheer for years to come! No idea why I named them this – they’re funny, cute and I I just LOVE these little charmers!

Have you tried the Starburst jelly beans? I’ve always loved jelly beans but I’ve definitely gone to an entirely new jellybean level with Starburst jellybeans. When I sketched out this project a few weeks ago, I bought the jellybeans. I ate the jellybeans. I’m completely mortified to admit how many times that process repeated itself. I thought I was so slick, eating these jellybeans on the sly. Right. Mr. Smarty Pants dryly asked if I was making MY jar about 10 times this size. He’s putting me on jellybean probation, right after this post! :)

I found these cute, little glass jars, made by Darice, at Jo-Ann. Here are the basic supplies I used to make one jar, including a new product I used for the first time. You can use whatever you have in your craft stash to make them Easter Parade ready!

Supplies:

  • Glass jar
  • One 3” smooth foam ball
  • Washi tape
  • MagiKote and brush or craft stick
  • Felt – I used regular craft felt sheets, stiff white plus regular pink for the “girl” ears and grey for the “boy”
  • 2” white pompom and small pink pompom
  • Styroglue, Fabric Mod Podge or fabric glue, low-temp hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Toothpicks
  • White cardstock, black and white acrylic paint, foam brush, fine tip permanent black marker
  • Optional: Pink chalk, ribbon, flowers or other embellishments of your choice

I made a template of a bunny ear on cardstock and used that to cut out sets of white ears. I made another, smaller template and cut out insides of the ears, in pink for the girls and grey for the boys. The pink and grey “inside” ears were glued to the white ears with fabric Mod Podge. Once they were dry, I pinched the bottom of the ears together and hot glued them onto toothpicks.

The jar lids got a quick cover of Washi tape – pink & white striped for the girls and green & white striped for the boys!

MagiKote is a covering for Styrofoam that creates a surface that can be sanded smooth, sculpted and painted. First, I took a small slice off the bottom of the Styrofoam balls so that they would sit flat.  I probably need to get the hang of the MagiKote; it worked well on the smooth Styrofoam, but I’m having a heck of a time with it on regular Styrofoam for a project I hope to share with you next week! Stir the MagiKote well with wooden stick. Use a brush or craft stick to apply 2-3 thin layers over the entire Styrofoam ball. I sanded the coated Styrofoam balls a bit to make them as soon as possible. Each ball got 2 coats of white acrylic paint.

Making eyes is SUCH a challenge for me but I did the best I could with black acrylic paint and fine tip black marker (they had to have eyelashes!). A little pink pompom for the nose, some whiskers and smile! The girls got blushed with pink chalk and even the little guy got a light flush of pink – spring fever, you see!  I made the “holes” for the toothpicks first with a paper piercer and then insert the toothpicks and didn’t even need to use glue! Ok, they have to be totally ready Easter, so I gave them a little Sunday best with bows and mini roses for the girls and ribbon bow tie for the guys.

Once the bunny heads were ready, I used Styroglue to glue them to the jar lids. The final touch was a big, fluffy pompom tail and a belly full of jellybeans!

How cute would these be as a little Easter gift? Or what do you think of one sitting on each plate as a favor at Easter dinner? I just have to put one on my desk at work! Not only will it bring me a smile, it’s a good way to get around the jellybean probation and yes, I’ll share! If you’re not a jellybean lover, just fill them up with your favorite little Easter candy. Spill the jellybeans! If you DO love them, what’s your favorite jellybean flavor?

Oh my heavens, those are so blasted cute, you are a genius girl. I have to make at least a couple of those for our granddaughters. They’re teenagers (14 and 17) so it’s hard to find things to give them (or make for them). Don’t know if their Mom will like me giving them jellybeans since they’ve both had braces but I’ll give it to them anyway. Their Mom will eat the jellybeans. I was sitting here making a list. Those little jars are so darned cute, hope they’re not too expensive. Pinning this project. Happy Spring
