Probably back at the beginning of spring, I picked up some laser cut wood pieces at Michael’s. I used a few of them on other projects, like my Bursting with Blooms Frame Wreath. This frame and create sentiment kind of got lost in the shuffle of Easter, Mother’s Day and other activities. A conversation, though, had me digging in the pile of Michaels’ bags to find these pieces and thinking about what we create every day.
Recently, a friend introduced me to someone at an event and as this very loyal friend is prone to do, she starting talking about my blog with the acquaintance. I could immediately tell that this was not something that the new person found particularly interesting, and as I started to steer the conversation in a different direction, my friend was pulling out her phone to share a few of her favorite projects from my blog. Before I could get out a word, the person said, “Doesn’t it drive you crazy to have to make all that stuff? Most people are way too busy to be making things.”
Though at the time I smiled and graciously moved on to another topic, I’ve thought a great deal about that brief conversation – and about creativity. Many people will say or think that they are not creative and I couldn’t disagree more! I believe that every day, people are expressing their own unique brand of creativity in thousands, if not millions, of different ways.
Yes, there is artistic creativity – art, crafts, music. Writers create books that captivate us. Those in film and television create works that entertain, educate and sometimes even disturb us. People create in the kitchen, cooking and baking fabulous recipes. People create discovery, hope, healing and faith through teaching, science, medicine, religion and more. Parents raise and teach their children and create the future.
It is the creative force of each individual person every single day that collectively moves us all forward toward a new and often better, tomorrow. Food, water and air are necessary to life, but creativity, in all of its many and wondrous forms, are for many, that indefinable nourishment of the soul. In those moments of life when things seem difficult, or the world may seem nearly impossible to understand, the simple act of creating can offer personal peace and calm.
Whatever it is that moves us, this simple and pretty sign is reminder to create something new every day. While we often may not think of it in these terms, most of us are creating every day. A new friendship. A discovery with our child. A memory with a friend. Creativity is simply everywhere. Making all this stuff is a part of me.
How do you define creativity? What are you creating every day?
