Darn ugly but delicious cherry crumb dessert…yes, there’s story behind the name! Cherry pie lovers and those with NO time to bake will become instant fans of this super easy, yummy dessert. Swap out the cherry for your favorite pie filling and in just about 30 minutes, dessert is on the table. It might not be the prettiest treat on a plate, but they’ll be grabbing a fork or spoon!
My Mom was always a stay-at-home mom; it was all big meals and homemade treats. Mom is and always has been a cleaning fanatic – a gene that I did NOT inherit! – though cooking seemed to be a chore. Not cleaning. Just cooking. Go figure, I got the cooking gene! Anyway, Mom was super organized and the cleaning was all done in the a.m., so in the afternoons she could watch the soaps. Especially one called As the World Turns. Let’s just say that Mom’s world turned around that soap opera!
One particular day, something big must have happened on the soap that brought all the neighborhood ladies together for coffee and a rehash. Time must have gotten away – I mean does that ever happen when a bunch of girls get gabbing? 😉 Mom had promised Dad a cherry pie but as the world turned it into cherry crumb dessert.
My Dad, who was just as sweet as cherry pie with such a great sense of humor, looked at the plate after dinner and joked that Mom had forgotten to put the crust in. Once a scoop of dessert was on his plate, he took a big bit, put down his fork and said, “Ok, this is darn ugly but it sure tastes delicious!”
So this recipe could be called the As the World Turns Dessert. Or, The Soaps Stole My Pie Dessert. No, darn ugly but delicious cherry crumb dessert it will always be!
This can be a go-to treat on that busy day! Pie filling, sour cream and almond extract mix together in minutes and the graham cracker crumb/walnut mixture gets sprinkled on top. The dessert bakes in just 20 minutes and is yummy warm or cold. Cherry not your family’s favorite? Change it up with strawberry, blueberry or any fruit pie filling.
You can amp up the messy and delicious factor by adding whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream. I still shake my head at my Dad calling this ugly! He put ketchup on literally everything, including sunny side up fried eggs at breakfast- I still shudder! Dad’s meal plate always looked as though it had been lifted from CSI. I adored my Dad though I think I know where I can attribute most of my weird food neuroses, lol.
The next time you need a quick dessert and time is in short supply, go ugly- but yummy! 🙂
