Create easy, Patriotic Pompom Topped Cupcake Liner Trees! Make some fun red, white & blue decor that will add a patriotic touch all through summer. Cupcake liners are cut and pinned to Styrofoam cones and topped with fluffy pompoms. Whether you use them as a centerpiece for Memorial Day or July 4th or add them to a table, they’ll help your patriotic decor shine!
Last year, I originally shared this great red, white & blue project at A Little Claireification. When I pulled this out last week, I feel in love with them all over again and wanted to share them here! You can use any patriotic cupcake liners-I found these at Hobby Lobby. I used about 75 liners to make 3 trees. Use scissors to cut up the side of a liner along a fold until you reach the center portion and cut away the entire center, or bottom, of the cupcake liner, so you’re left with just the pleated side. You can easily cut 2-3 liners at one time, so this process is quick!
Next, we need Styrofoam cones and a lot of straight pins! It’s interesting to make the trees different heights, so I used one each of 11 7/8”, 8 7/8” and 5”-make your trees any sizes you like. Start at the bottom of the cone with the cupcake liner touching the surface of the table and attach the liner to the cone with straight pins. Attach liners all around the cone. When you reach a part of the cone where you need to use more than one liner to reach all the way around, just trim a liner to fit. Make some additional small folds if you need to make the liners lie completely flat against the cone. I think it’s totally okay if they’re a little off balance and topsy-turvy; it makes them fun and whimsical!
Continue pinning liners to the cone and space the layers to you liking. When you get to the top of the cone, create an “faux” top, with an extra layer to finish tree. Cut a piece of cupcake liner to fit at the top and glue the liner to hold a circular shape. Add the top piece with a tiny bit of glue.
A fluffy fun pompom is the perfect topper, I think! I made the same 1 ½” sized pompom for the top of each tree. I had this yarn in my stash, but you could make one red, one white & one blue. Once the pompoms are made and trimmed, attach them with some craft glue to a toothpick or a wooden skewer cut to size and carefully push the toothpick into the Styrofoam cone.
The patriotic trees are finished and how cute are they??
