DIY {Big} Paper Twist Door Flower!

DIY {Big} Paper Twist Door Flower! How-to at littlemisscelebration.com @CindyEikenbergUPDATED (4/13/13) If you want something for your door that says Spring in a BIG way – this is definitely it! Kind of fun, funky and definitely different, this {big} paper twist flower is not for the faint of heart! With a soft, textured center made of pompoms, this flower is an unusual spin on a front door wreath. Since it IS made of paper, it should go on a front door that has some protection from the elements – or put it on the inside of your front door! I really like having something on both sides of the door – gives us something pretty to see coming and going.

I love making things with Paper “Creative” Twist and while it may be a little out of fashion, it’s such a fun product to craft with. You can learn more about it and where you can purchase paper twist at my earlier post here.

Of course, you can make a smaller version of this over-the-top flower. When I was putting this together, my husband, aka Mr. Smarty-pants, said, “Where are you putting that enormous flower??” He gets a little nervous sometimes about what I put on the front door, because that means he actually has to be careful going in and out…is Mr. Smarty-pants the only husband that feels the need to slam the door to make sure it’s closed?? I’ll just let this be a surprise when he leaves for work tomorrow!

I had a number of requests for the flower petal templates, which I should have included right away. The PDF file is included below!

Here’s what I used to make the door flower:

  • 2 packages of Paper “Creative” Twist – use any color you like. Of course, I used pink!
  • 1 package of green Paper “Creative” Twist
  • 7-8 ” Styrofoam disk
  • 1 package of 80 count wood floral picks with wire
  • White yarn for pompoms (I used the Clover pompom maker and made 3” pompoms)
  • One piece of 18-gauge floral wire
  • White tacky glue or Styroglue

The “petals” are in three rows and lengths. Cut 23 lengths of paper twist (pink) about 9 ½” long, 22 lengths about 8 ¾” long and 20 lengths about 7” long.

Open all of the cut lengths of paper twist. Cut each length into a petal shape with a rounded top. I made a paper template for each sized petal, traced it on the open paper twist and cut them out.

After all of the petals are cut, gather the bottom of each petal and attach to a floral pick.

For the first row, use the longest petals. Dip the ends of the floral pick in Styroglue or tacky glue and push the pick into the side of the Styrofoam disk. Continue placing petals around the edge; here’s the first row of 23 petals.

For the second row, add the medium length petals in the same way, but place them between the first row of petals. This row has 22 petals.

The last row of petals is closest to the top edge of the Styrofoam disk and fills in the flower. This row has 20 petals. Here’s how it looks with all three rows of petals attached. I had to sit on the kitchen floor to put this baby together!

Now, we can see the wired edges of the petals glued to the Styrofoam disk. That is NOT pretty! In order to hide that, we’re going to mimic the sepal of a flower, which is the green portion that protects an actual flower bud before it opens. Cut a length of green paper twist to fit around the circumference of the Styrofoam disk. Open the paper twist, cut in half and if you’d like, trim the top with pinking shears. Attach both lengths around the Styofoam disk with straight pins and adjust to cover the bottom of the wired petals where they attach to the disk.

To give this funky flower a textural, fluffy center, make 14 three inch white yarn pompoms. I trimmed the pompoms flat on the back and trimmed them down quite a bit on the front. With a foam brush, cover the entire Styrofoam disk with tacky glue or Styroglue and pack the pompoms in tightly to fill the entire circle. Let dry for at least 12 hours. Make a loop from 18-gauge floral wire and push it into the top of Styrofoam disk for hanging.

Here’s the big flower on my front door! It was a major hoot taking this photo on Easter morning, in my pajamas, backed up into the powder room to get the whole thing in the shot. I will actually be moving this to the inside of my front door – surprise, Mr. Smarty-pants.

  24. Love this idea! Do you think it could be made from crepe paper? I only have paper twists in metallic colors…think Christmas! But I have tons of crepe paper I’d like to use up.

Does your crepe paper have a lot of “body”? You know how the paper twist really holds it shape. I would try a petal and see how it holds up. I really would love to hear how it works!
