Put a big spring statement on the front door with this Bursting with Blooms Frame Wreath! An old frame gets a fresh coat of white paint and is backed with floral mesh to hold masses of gorgeous silk, pink peonies. Little wooden bluebirds hold a banner announcing that the season of bloom has arrived!
Now that spring is here, it’s time to put something fresh on the front door! You know I like to be somewhat unconventional and yes, even a bit over-the-top when it comes to my front door. When I saw these beautiful silk peonies at Michaels, in varying shades of pink, I saw my favorite flower that could last right through fall. Inspiration immediately struck! I decided to fill a frame with these lovely flowers. I used two bunches each of light and dark pink flowers.
I grabbed an old frame from a stash that I have; this one measures about 20” x 24”. First, I gave the frame a few coats of white paint – I used DecoArt Multi-Surface Paint in Cottonball. Now, the frame needed something to hold the flowers. I used floral netting.
Working on the back of the frame, I trimmed the floral netting to fit across the frame at a bit of an angle. The netting was trimmed with wire snips. Be careful when cutting the netting, because the cut edges are very sharp. I have a few cuts and wire stab wounds, but it’s all in the name of artistic expression. 🙂 Thumbtacks and high-temp hot glue was used to hold the mesh to the frame. Two large, sawtooth hangers were added to the top back of the frame for hanging.
Now it’s time to add the flowers! Stems were threaded through the wire mesh, trimmed as necessary and “tied” to the mesh with 24 gauge paddle wire. I used silver paddle wire instead of green, so I could see where I was working. All of the flowers were added until the front was lush and full. Honestly, the back of the frame is kind of a hot mess, but we won’t tell anyone, right?
I found a few cute wooden cut-outs at Michaels that I wanted to include with this wreath. Spring means birds and butterflies! A wooden butterfly got a coat of purple paint and some outlines of Black Stickles.
Two little birds, painted blue and given some sparkle with Waterfall Stickles, hold up a banner that says “Bloom.” The banner was made with flower-printed, chalkboard tags from Michaels; the letters were drawn with a light grey chalk mark marker and outlined with a bright pink chalk marker. A pink & white striped ribbon was attached to the frame with hot-glue and the little birds were glued on top of the ribbon on each side of the frame. The tags were tied to the ribbon with 1/8” satin ribbon in light pink.
The same striped ribbon used on the banner was threaded through the sawtooth hangers and tied into a bow for hanging. The bursting with blooms frame wreath was all ready to hang on the front door and I am just SO happy with how this turned out and how it looks on the front door! What do you think?
When I was telling a sweet friend of mine about this project, I said I was making a frame wreath with silk peonies. I happened to be dealing with some major sinus issues at the time and sounded really stuffed-up. Anyway, she gave me the weirdest look when I told her.
“You’re making a wreath….with silk panties?” asked my friend, rather shocked.
I nearly choked with laughter! Quickly, I corrected that no, it was silk FLOWERS. No panties.
It took us a bit of time to recover from the hysterical laughter. Lesson learned – don’t say “peonies” with a cold. 🙂
