Buttoned-Up Stars & Stripes Wreath

A flat, wooden wreath form and large wooden stars get a big dose of red, white & blue in this Buttoned-Up Stars & Stripes Wreath! Yarn, buttons and beads create a pretty patriotic welcome that you can hang with pride on your front door for years to come!

You all KNOW that I love to make fun things for my front door and it’s no secret that I have a made a lot of different “wreaths” – and we use that term loosely, I might add! This year, Mr. Smarty Pants has been whining a bit about storing all of my front door creations. He actually asked me to not make anything new this year. Does that man NOT know me after thirty-plus years? ? I absolutely loved the Patriotic Door Rosette that I made last year; however, when it was inadvertently crushed beyond recognition by a certain hubby during a recent reorganization in the storage room, I was off and running with a new red, white & blue project for the door. Shh, don’t tell him I had every intention of making this before the rosette disaster. It will be our little secret!

This project starts out with an 18” flat wooden wreath form from Michael’s. Last year, I picked up this big skein of red, white & blue cotton yarn on sale. You could use any kind of red, white & blue yarn. Makes stripes with individual colors of yarn!

I wrapped the entire flat wreath form in yarn, which gave it sort of a striped pattern. The wrapping went pretty quickly! Wrap the yarn tightly and close together so that the wooden form is not visible. It’s an easy and good backdrop for the stars! I used 28 gauge wire, looping around three times, to make a hanger for the wreath. I just wound the wire firmly over top of the yarn, because the hanger is fairly hidden behind a star.

I found these large, 9” wooden stars at Michaels. We don’t even need to paint them because they’re getting completely covered in buttons and beads!

For each star, I used a pack of red, white and blue buttons and beads from The Button Artist, available from Jo-Ann or my good friends at Blumenthal Lansing. Each pack contains more than enough buttons and beads to make each star beautiful! Gem-Tac Glue was used to adhere the buttons. Attach a first layer of buttons to the star in any pattern that you like.

Once the first layer of buttons is dry and secure, add a second layer of buttons directly on top of the first layer. After the second layer is set, it’s time to bead! Using an old, small paintbrush, I added glue all around the edge of the star, working in small sections at a time, and pressed the small beads & tiny buttons into the glue. You can also add beads to any open areas between the buttons and I even beaded the outer edge of the stars, too. Just button and bead that star completely until it sparkles and shines! I made one in red, blue and white – here’s how the blue star looks in all of its buttoned and beaded glory!

I attached the three stars onto the yarn-covered wreath form with high-temp hot glue. Just to add a little more patriotic pop, I made nine 2-inch pompoms and tied them onto the wreath, between the stars, in groups of three. Instead of a ribbon bow for a final touch, I used six strands of yarn to make yarn “bows” and added six of the yarn bows around the wreath.

Isn’t this pretty and so great for the 4th? It was a bit of work but SO worth it and it will something to look forward to displaying every June. I’m really going all in with the red, white & blue decorations this year – be on the lookout for some great window wreaths soon that will be a fun, easy July 4th project for the whole family!
