Felt Filled Metal Hearts

January 25, 2016 By Cindy

Mix metal, softness and sparkle for Valentine’s Day with Felt Filled Metal Hearts! Large metal hearts get softened with rolls of felt and a sprinkle of sparkle on the side. Hang these pretty hearts as part of your Valentine décor or give as a gift to a daughter, Mom or BFF!

When I saw these metal hearts at Michaels, I thought a little cupid décor that combined hard and soft would be fun! These hearts are a good size, about 5 ½” across at the widest part, so there’s plenty of creative space!

Each heart comes pre-strung with twine for hanging. As usual, I snipped off the twine and added a ½ satin ribbon for hanging; one is soft pink and the other in red.

Grab some sheets of craft felt! I used red and white for one of the hearts, and on the other, two shades of pink plus white. Cut 1” strips of felt on the long side of each felt sheet. The kids can totally help with this! Starting at the short end, roll each strip of felt into a tight coil. Attach the end of the felt onto the roll with felt craft glue. Let the felt rolls dry.

Once the felt rolls are dry, attach them to the inside of the metal heart by adding low-temp hot glue to a flat end. You can add the rolls in a specific pattern or just randomly, like I did. I used 32 felt rolls in each heart. After you have added all of the rolls – and this goes quickly! – you will have some small gaps here and there. Cut some shorter strips of felt, in the same 1” width, to fill in the gaps. You won’t even have to use hot glue to add the filler rolls, just stuff them in there. ?

At this point, you CAN stop because the hearts look pretty fabulous as is, but you know I’m going I have to add a little sparkle, right? I grabbed my trusty Stickles in red and add large dots to the side of the red and white heart.

The heart in pinks and white got dots of Stickles in Glam Pink and Cotton Candy.

Of course, you could add ribbon or any other pretty embellishment you want to the side!

What do you think? I absolutely love how these felt filled metal hearts turned out! I think I’ll give one to my daughter, one to my mom and make another for a friend. Oh, and maybe I’ll get to make one for myself, lol.

I hope that everyone who got a BIG snowy visit from Mother Nature this weekend is doing ok! She left us nearly 30” of snow and our street hasn’t been touched yet, so we’re hoping we can actually see a street today! I took this early yesterday morning – it’s just a world of white outside.

Thanks for visiting and stay warm!
