Folded Stand-Up Paper Stars

Folded stand-up paper stars are a fun, family project to create for your July 4th celebration! Star shapes are cut from red, white and blue cardstock, folded in half and glued together. The glued stars stand-up with a wave of patriotic color! Top the stars with a flourish of “fireworks” made from curled red, white & blue tinsel stems. These stars can make a great centerpiece for your holiday table!

I had planned to share this project last week, but there’s plenty of time to put together these fun stand-up stars in time for the July 4th holiday and use them all through summer. Over the past year, I’ve made paper pumpkins and paper eggs, so I thought we definitely needed some paper stars!

For a template, print out a star shape from a word processing program or the internet. I made two sizes; one star measured flat 7” across and the other 5”. I recommend that you don’t make your star too much smaller than 5”. The narrow points of the star make folding it in half a challenge if it’s too small; I know, I tried and had a paper mess! ?

Use your template to trace stars onto red, white and blue cardstock. I made about 45 star shapes for the 5” star and 65 for the 7” star; you can make the shapes as dense or loose as you like. Keep the kids busy cutting out star shapes! Once the stars are cut, fold them in half. Start building the stand-up star by using craft glue and gluing stars together at the fold. After just three are glued together, the star will stand up!

Keep adding more folded stars, alternating red, white and blue. To get a nice, full star, add stars another folded star and between star halves. Don’t worry if the star tops don’t line up perfectly – it is a little tough to get those narrow shapes completely aligned! We’re going to top the star with some “fireworks” and that top will disappear! Once you’re happy with the shape, it will look like this!

To finish off the star, cover up the top and add a final July 4th touch, create a “firework” with red, white and blue tinsel stems! Cut each tinsel stem color about 4” long for a small star and 6” long for a larger star. Wind each stem around a pencil to curl it; twist the three curled stems together and form a circle shape at the bottom to fit the top of the star. Attach with tinsel stems to the top of the star with craft glue and let dry. Now you have fun, folded stand-up paper stars, topped with sparkly fireworks, to add some red, white and blue anywhere you need it!

Aren’t these fun? They are very easy to make and I love that that it’s a project that the whole family can do together. I know they’re paper, but stored carefully, these stars can be part of your July 4th celebration every year!

I’ve had a lot of fun with my patriotic projects this year and I feel like with the Olympics coming up in August, they’ll do double-duty this year. I am a major Olympic fan and cannot wait for them to start in August. I know I’ll be glued to the TV as much as possible!
