Make an easy Light-Up Home for the Holidays Gift! This is perfect for anyone on your list in their first home, a new home….for a someone who can’t be home for the holidays or to celebrate your holiday home! An MDF door gets painted and glued to a flat, painted canvas. Deck the door with a little wreath and garland made from small, artificial evergreen roping, add cheerful, small red ornaments and craft lights. Sparkly, red letters spell out the sentiment and it’s simply framed for a lovely celebration of Christmas at home.
The saying goes that there’s no place like home for the holidays. Sometimes we, or those we love, can’t be at home for the holidays. Perhaps there is someone on our gift list who is celebrating the holidays in their first home or a new home! Maybe we’d just want to celebrate how fantastic our home looks decked out for the season! This is a great gift for any or all of these reasons and it’s difficult at all to make!
Here’s what I used to make put this light-up home for the holidays gift together! All materials came from Michaels unless noted otherwise.
- 9” x 12” flat artist canvas Gray and white acrylic craft paint – you can use paints to match your home or your gift recipient’s house!
- MDF Door
- Small evergreen garland roping (from AC Moore)
- Mini red ornaments
- Mini battery-operated LED white craft lights
- Red sparkly scrapbook letters
- ¼” red and white striped ribbon
- Tim Holtz Idea-ology Curio Knobs – I used to crystal look knob
- Simple black 9” x 12” metal frame
- Christmas-themed Washi Tape
- Hot glue gun, glue stick and craft glue
Give the MDF door a few coats of white paint and the canvas a few coats of your chosen color – I used gray and let dry.
Glue the painted MDF door to the center of the painted canvas. While that dries, use the evergreen roping to create a wreath approximately 3 ½” in diameter.
Hot glue the small red ornaments to the wreath. Attach the wreath to the door with hot glue and add a small bow.
Using hot glue, attach the evergreen garland around the door, trimming the bottom of the garland with wire snips at the bottom of each side. Work the LED craft lights, which are attached to thin wire, through and around the garland, trying to distribute the lights as evenly as possible. Hot glue additional red ornaments to the garland and attach the crystal door knob to the door. Glue the sparkle red letters in an arc to the top of the canvas to spell out “Home for the Holidays.”
I didn’t really get a photo of this, though I added a Christmas-themed Washi tape all around the outer perimeter of the metal frame. Bring the thin wire and battery box to the back of the canvas, remove the glass from the frame and pop in the finished canvas. Position the battery box on the back of the frame so that the on/off switch and battery cover can be easily accessed, and attach the box to the frame with hot glue. Gather the wire neatly and use a twist tie to hold in place and tuck into the frame.
The light-up home for the holidays gift is ready to give or decorate your home!
Hang it on the wall or stand it on a table – it’s sure to bring a glow of holiday warmth and cheer!
Thanks so much for visiting today!
