For a moment, I’d like to put aside the wedding projects, the tips, the planning, the vendors, and just reflect a tiny bit on being Mom when your son gets married.
Before I sat down at my computer to write this, I was confident that I would have some profound and thought provoking things to share. Truly, it’s much more difficult to write this compared to what was in my head when I was thinking about it. Because it is very personal and emotional and if you’re reading this and you are a mother…I’m pretty sure you get it.
Just at the moment that the wedding of your son is about to begin, a million pictures fly across your mind. The day he was born. His first steps. The first time he said Mama. His first day of school. His first great success. His first major disappointment. His graduation from high school, from college, when he moved away from home. Where did those years go and how did all go by so fast? You are proud, though, and happy, and have a deep sense of peace, because all of the sacrifice, the worry, the downright hard but wonderful work of being a parent is repaid a million times over by the amazing and incredible man he has become.
Mere words of any kind would fall far short of adequately describing the breadth and depth of emotions a mother feels when her son gets married. There is some sadness, yes, because life as you have known it is forever changed. Though that change is a good thing. You are blessed to have a lovely new daughter-in-law join your family. New chapters will be written. New memories will be made. More joy will be yours.
I was a lucky lady to have had such a wonderful mother-in-law who was dedicated to everything that celebrated family. Hopefully, I can live up to that example.
This gift given to me by Scott and Chelsea at their wedding rehearsal dinner brought a lot of tears – though perhaps, these are the only words needed.
