It’s time to put the Dads in the celebration spotlight! Father’s Day will be here before we know it! I sometimes find “crafting” something for the guys to be a tiny bit of a challenge – maybe it’s just for MY guys! I know a LOT of the men in our lives play golf. How about a special buddy made of old golf balls on a little felt putting green “fore” Dad’s desk?
I found this cute little golf ball puppy in almost 20 year old Quick & East Crafts magazine and just thought it was adorable. Immediately, I thought this little guy needed a special “putting” green place of honor to sit on. You don’t have to permanently attach the puppy to the green, so he can be moved around or sit proudly by himself!
Here are the supplies we need:
- 7 old golf balls
- White acrylic paint and foam brush
- Scraps of felt – I used red (for the mouth and collar) and brown (for the ears) but change up the colors if you’d like!
- Thick green felt
- High-temp glue gun and glue sticks
- 2 black pompons, one ¾” and one ½”
- 2 wiggly eyes, 15 mm
- 9 1/2” “silver” tray from the Dollar Store
- Two white golf tees
- Heavyweight chipboard and Mod Podge
- Black cardstock
- Striped paper straw in red/white, small red pompon
Using hot glue, glue the first three golf balls together as in the photo below.
Add the 4th and 5th golf balls directly behind the second and third.
Add the 6th and 7th golf balls on top of the first 5, as in the photo below. Let cool.
Paint the golf balls with white paint. It took me three coats to cover all the words! Let dry.
Cut a mouth from red felt and ears from brown or black felt. You can make floppy ears, as I did, or stand up ears. Glue mouth, eyes, ears and the ½” black pompon for nose as in the photo below. Add a 3/4″ pompon “tail” to the back of the top golf ball. I didn’t have a large enough pompon for the tail, so I improvised and glued 3 smaller ones together!
Cut a 3” x ¼” strip of felt (I used red) for a collar. You can decorate the collar! I added gold and white star brads that I had on hand. You could glue sequins, buttons or just leave is plain. Hot glue the collar around the dog’s neck.
Cut a 10” circle from chipboard. I traced around a dinner black. Mod Podge the chipboard to green felt. Let dry and cut out. Hot glue the felt covered chipboard circle to the silver tray; the circle will extend slightly over the edge of the tray. I decided to cut strips of green felt, created “grass” with Martha Stewart’s fringe scissors and glued all around the edge of the chipboard circle.
Hot glue two white golf tees, crossed, to the felt. Add a black cardstock circle for the “hole.” Make a golf flag from a 6” piece of red/white paper straw, a tiny red pompon and a flag banner – I made mine in Microsoft Word, cut out and glued to the straw. Hot glue the flag to the “green” and surround the bottom of the flag pole with more felt “grass” to cover any hot glue that shows.
I decided not to permanently attach our little golf ball buddy, so he could be moved around. Don’t you think he would look cute sitting on a table or desk? I think he would always make Dad smile!
This project is in honor of my Dad – though sadly we lost him at a much too young age, my Dad was a golf fanatic! I know he absolutely would have loved this golf ball buddy and I hope this might be a fun idea for the golf loving guy in your life!
Happy Monday and thank you so much for visiting today!
Linking this project up at these awesome parties!

I am so sorry about the loss of your father, Cindy.
I love this project…you are so creative! I’m going to make this as a summer project on a day with my little Easton. He loves golf! Even taking the summer golf classes every week. (I don’t know where he got it from…maybe becz we live so close to a course. But Justin and I are definitely not golfers!) So, he’ll love doing this project with the balls we go and find at night when the course closes. Pinning onto my Father’s Day board. (=
Gloria, thanks for always making my day! If Easton is a golfer, this would be so cute for him! I always appreciate your visits and comments, thank you!! Hope you have a happy week!
