Officially, there’s still one week of summer left. I just can’t wait, though, to jump right in with some fun projects for Halloween. It’s my second favorite holiday to create and celebrate! I like to mix up spooky and sweet in my boo décor. These candy corn pompom wreaths are inspired by my favorite fall candy and my addiction to pompoms! ? Bright and colorful as their candy namesake, I actually made these wreaths for my front windows, but I have an easy way to hang both on the front door at the end of the post!
Here’s how we make the wreaths! All supplies came from Michaels.
- Two 12” flat wood wreath forms
- Yellow and orange acrylic paint & foam brush
- Three skeins of yarn in white, bright yellow and orange (I used Red Heart)
- Clover 2 ½” pompom maker
- 3 rolls of sheer orange/yellow striped, wire edge ribbon, Celebrate It collection
Paint the wood wreath forms with 2-3 coats of acrylic paint. I painted one side orange and one yellow. I only had orange on hand in gloss, so mine is kind of shiny. Use whatever you have on hand! The paint is is simply to cover the wood in case any shows through.
We need a total of 48 pompoms; 8 each in white, yellow and orange. For my new friends, I love making pompoms! The Clover pompom maker is quick, easy and worth buying for turning out lots of fluffy balls of cute! Make your pompoms in whatever way works best for you. Make very long yarn “tails” when you tie off you pompom. We’ll be using those long, yarn tails to tie the pompoms to the wreath form.
Tie the finished pompoms together, in sets of three, with one white, yellow and orange pompom in each set. Use the yarn “tails” to tie them together into a triangular shape. Tie two pompoms together first, and add the third. When finished, you’ll have 16 sets of three candy corn colored pompoms.
Now, we’re simply going to tie everything to the painted wood wreath form. Start with a pompom set on the front of the wreath form, bring the tails around to the back and tie tightly in a double knot. Don’t cut the tails, yet! In case you need to re-tie any pompom sets, make adjustments and because we’re using some of the tails for the hanger, leave them attached to the pompoms until the wreath is completed.
Cut approximately 18” lengths of the orange/yellow striped ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a large bow between the sets of pompoms, leaving ribbon tails that extend past the pompoms on both the outside and inside of the wreath form.
Continue adding pompom sets and ribbon until the wreath is full. Use the yarn tails from two sets of pompoms on either side of a bow at the top of the wreath, where you would like it to hang. We’re making a “hanger” for the wreath, using those long tails of yarn on the pompoms. Bring the yarn tails up above the wreath – you’ll have six lengths of yarn of each side – and tie them together tightly into a double knot. We have our wreath hanger! Turn the wreath over, fluff the pompoms, adjust the bow loops so that they peek up from the pompoms – and we’re done!
I just can’t get a photo of the wreath facing out in my window, so I tried to take one with it facing in. I’m going to love these in my windows! Here’s a trick to hang them on the front door, one under the other. I have a metal door, so I use one of those magnet hangers. Measure a double length of fishing line so that one wreath hangs below the other. Thread the fishing line through the yarn “hanger,” tie at the top into several tight knots and hang the fishing line on the wreath hanger. Hang the second wreath by the yarn right on the wreath hanger and you have a double wreath. ?
Aren’t these SO cute? I just love how full, fluffy and Halloween-happy they are and the candy-corn striped bows add an extra-fun touch! I’m totally inspired by candy corn this year – be on the lookout for something to go perfectly with these wreaths!
Do you like to decorate for Halloween? Do you like to go spooky, sweet or a blend of both?
Wishing you a happy day and thanks so much for visiting!
