Give a glass apothecary jar a pop of personality with a little paint and polka dots! Pretty in paint, the jar can serve candy or be a decorative piece in any room. Creating your own glass beauty is so easy – no mad painting skills required!

Glass and crystal are just a few things on the long list of things I like to collect. If you ask a certain someone, (aka Mr. Smarty Pants) there just might be a bit TOO much glass. It’s pretty and sparkly – ok, so perhaps blinding on some days might be more accurate – though not always very functional or…. fun. I decided I’d work on adding some painted glass jars this year to add some color and spark!
It was tough to decide on a color, since Americana Multi-Surface Paint comes in so many amazing shades! I decided on Flamingo pink and Cotton Ball white, which will work for Valentine’s Day, transition perfectly to spring and Easter, is my favorite color and also my daughter’s favorite. Speaking of daughter, she has already claimed this jar as her own. It was really kind of her to let me share before she whisks it away! ? Originally, I was going to add Lipstick red, but stay tuned for another project!
I love the shape of this apothecary jar, which I found at Michaels. Michaels has a lot of pretty glass and all of the Americana Multi-Surface Paints are available there, too. Pick your favorite glass jar and paint color! Wash and dry the glass. Since we’re just painting the outer surface of the jar, saturate some cotton balls with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and wipe the entire outer surface and let dry.
Use a basic glass or other soft, flat brush to apply paint to the outer surface of the jar. Use a light touch and apply several thin coats. Don’t worry if your first coat of paint doesn’t look great. After 3 thin coats, my jar had a beautiful, soft satin finish all pretty in pink!
You can add big, little or a combination of different sized polka dots in any pattern that makes you happy. Dip just the tip of the opposite end of a paintbrush into a small pool of paint and lightly “dot” the painted surface of the jar. Test out the size and feel first on a piece of scrap paper; you’ll be dotting away in seconds! To get uniform dots, dip the end of the paintbrush into the paint after each dot. Once you are happy with your polka dots, let dry.
Let your finished glass jar air dry, or “cure” for four days. Place the lid and jar on a baking sheet, place in a cold oven and bake the piece at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Let cool completely and your masterpiece is safe to both hand wash and put in the dishwasher. Add a little extra pizazz! I tied a pink-polka dotted satin ribbon around the handle on the lid, finished with small silk flower.
I’m just happy as can be with how my pretty in pink apothecary looks. I see a whole row of differently colored jars on my fireplace mantel this spring! Americana Multi-Surface Paint can be used all kinds of different surfaces, like wood, metal, plastic, fabric and more. Visit the DecoArt Multi-Surface website for more crafting ideas and inspiration. I know you won’t be surprised to see a few more Multi-Suface Paint projects from me soon.
What color would you paint your glass apothecary jar? You might want to paint two – be ready with one to keep and one to share!
Thanks so much for visiting and have a fabulous day!
