Don’t just give Mom flowers for Mother’s Day– add some forever tulips! These flowers will never wilt and Mom will have them for years! These paper mache tulips easily come to life with spring-bright paint colors. Give them dimension and sparkle with an outline of tiny beads and Stickles. On a tabletop or windowsill, these pretty tulips will bring charm and color all season.
Now that April is here, it’s time to start thinking about Mother’s Day, and other spring celebrations for the girls, and yes, even a little something special for us! Who doesn’t love flowers? Tulips are one of the signature flowers of spring, but as with most flowers, their beauty doesn’t last as long as we’d like. Plus, given that our weather on Sunday was in the 30’s, I’m hoping the sprouting flowers haven’t been frost bitten! These paper mache tulips let us keep the spring spirit for months – and they are so easy to transform from plain to wow!
The paper mache tulips came from Create for Less. I like to make things in threes, so I got a tall one that measures 10” and two smaller flowers that measure 7”. Both sizes are approximately 1 ¾” deep. Here’s how I finished my flowers!
First, I gave the tulips two coats of gesso. For color, I used DecoArt Multi-Surface paint in Turf Green, Flamingo Pink, Lipstick Red and Yellow. After the gesso, I gave the leaves two coats of green.
I went with pink, yellow and red, which are my favorite tulip colors, but you should use the colors that you love best. The flowers each got two coats of paint in their individual colors. Since these are so easy to paint, with a large surface, even the kids could paint these (and give them to you!)
These tulips look pretty just painted, but it just wouldn’t be me without some sparkly embellishment! I have a lot of tiny beads and sparkles in my craft stash and used them to outline the front, back and top edges of the flowers. Working in sections, I used Gem-Tac glue and a paintbrush to add a border of glue and pressed on the beads. There was every color in my stash but red, so I mixed two different colors of red seed beads, with a little white.
Once the glue was dry and the beads were secure – I let it dry overnight – I finished the flowers by adding an outline of green Stickles glitter glue to the leaves. The beads and Stickles give the flowers pop and sparkle without being TOO much!
I totally LOVE how these turned out – don’t you think they are so pretty? Now I love them, my daughter loves them and one of my friends loves them, too – I definitely intend these to go to my Mom, so I think I’ll have to order some more so we each have a set of flowers. ?
I’ve been a busy bee, trying to get a little ahead (ha!) on projects and recipes, because we’re heading out on a spring vacation in two weeks. I’m excited about the upcoming April projects and can’t wait to share them!
Thank you so much for visiting and hope you have a wonderful week.
