Whether Mom lives near or far, a reminder that you love her will deliver a daily smile! This Love You Mom Sign is super easy to put together with a light-as-air, ready-made, linen covered heart and wood sentiment. Add a ruffle of ribbon for a heartfelt gift that Mom will love!
Since I lost my Dad as a young teenager, I’ve been even closer to my Mom. While I realize how very lucky I am to still have her, I worry that I don’t spend as much time with her as I should. Though we live only about an hour away from one another, all too often I allow the pressures and obligations of daily life, work, home, even the blog, keep me from visiting Mom as much as I would like. We do talk on the phone a lot, but this Mother’s Day, I wanted to make her something that lets her know I love her every single day.
On a recent trip to Michaels, these linen covered surfaces caught my eye, especially the heart! All of the supplies used in this project are from Michaels.
The back of the surface is corrugated cardboard, so the piece is very light.
The pre-finished wooden Love You Mom makes it a snap to add a sweet sentiment to the heart! I used craft glue to add the wood piece to the center of the heart and let dry.
Some black button stickers were added around the perimeter of the heart. Even though the buttons are stickers, I added some glue to the back of each button to make sure each one was firmly attached. For a little pop of color in the neutral color palette of the sign, a scattering a red felt flowers, each with a rhinestone center, were added. I put a red rhinestone on the heart in the word Mom.
The heart looked so pretty and I could have totally stopped right here, though I felt it just needed a finished touch. Ribbon! I thought this cream ribbon, with black, dark and light brown polka dots, plus a bit of sparkle, would look great with the heart. Using a needle and thread, I made a running stitch along one end of the ribbon to gather it into a ruffle. I made two ruffles of ribbon, long enough to completely edge the outside perimeter of the heart. Working on from the back of the heart, I attached the ribbon to the cardboard edge with hot glue.
Cover up the hot-glued edge and finish the back of the sign quickly and easily with a cover of Washi tape. Add a ribbon for hanging; since the piece is so light, I cut a piece of ribbon, knotted the ends and attached the knots to each side of the heart with hot glue. Finish the top of the hanger with a bow.
Simple, pretty and sweet, I just know my Mom is going to love this! She absolutely adores receiving handmade gifts and I kind of think she looks forward to seeing what I’ve made for her on Mother’s Day. I will make me happy to know that every day, she has a pretty, visual reminder that she is loved and appreciated.
Mom is getting three handmade things this year! I suspect this may be her favorite, though. I’ll let you know! Thanks so much for visiting!
