We’re diving headfirst into holiday crafting – hope you’re ready! It’s always fun to make ornaments! We can hang them on our own tree, give them as gifts, or one of my personal favorite things to do, use them to top off a gift box – the gift recipient gets a double gift! These Paper Mache Snowflake Ornaments get extra double bonus points, because we – or the lucky someone we give one to – can use them as decorations all through the winter months. There are tons of creative ways to finish paper mache, and today, I’m sharing three different ways to give these pretty flakes some holiday dazzle!
These paper mache snowflakes are available at Create For Less and they are big, measuring about 5 ½” across and have a gold cord for hanging. Whew, good thing these aren’t the real thing falling down from the heavens – we’d need a plow! ?
First, I gave each snowflake a coat of acrylic gesso and two coats of white acrylic paint. The coat of gesso is not absolutely necessary, but it gives a nice smooth surface to the paper mache and you have to use less white paint.
Once the paint is dry, the creative fun begins! I wanted to make these flakes really pop! The first one is kind of my favorite! It’s covered in gold and silver sequins, adhered to the surface with Gem-Tac. First, I attached sequins around the entire perimeter, alternating gold/silver and overlapping the sequins. Next, I filled in the rest of the flake, building up the sequins in some sections for a little extra texture.
Full disclosure, as always, my friends! I used individual sequins and this particular ornament took a bit of time to complete. It was totally worth the time and effort, because I absolutely love how it turned out! I just set up crafting shop in front of the TV, turned on the Hallmark channel for inspiration and holiday spirit, and channeled my inner elf! I added a small, gold bow to the top of the ornament.
The next ornament was bejeweled with clear and turquoise blue gems, and topped off with a bow of sheer, white ribbon.
The last snowflake was super quick! I used different sizes and tones of white buttons from my button stash and added a silver bow.
The backs of the snowflakes could be left plain, but come on, you all know me! I added glitter to the back of each snowflake. Using Martha Stewart’s glittering glue, I added gold glitter to the sequined flake, silver to the gem flake and iridescent white to the button flake. Once the glitter was dry, I sprayed the glittered surface with clear, acrylic spray. It does help a lot to keep the glitter ON the ornament. No words of wisdom for containing the glitter during the process of creating! I’m pretty sure I’ll still be sweeping up glitter in June, and Mr. Smarty Pants and I have both gone off to work for a week with stray sparkle or more attached to some part of us!
Aren’t these so pretty? Whether you gem, sequin, button, paper, paint or come up with your own creative touch for these paper mache snowflake ornaments, you’ll have a lovely addition for your tree or packages! I don’t want to part with these and hope I have time to finish another set or two for gift giving.
I hope your holiday crafting spirit is getting warmed up, because we’re just at the tip of the snowflake! Thank you so much for visiting today!

Hi Cindy – I love your glamorous snowflakes! They belong in a Macy’s store window. I am soooo not ready for Christmas yet. Sigh… Hugs, Holly
Your ornaments are so sweet. What a nice Christmas craft to dive into. The best party of your post though, was that you turned on the Hallmark Channel. I have been watching the Hallmark Channel Christmas shows as I bake for the holidays (the cookies are in the freezer)! Great minds think alike!
I love your snowflake ornaments Cindy. They’re sparkle-icious!

Super cute idea! I love sequins.
Wow! Your ornaments are absolutely gorgeous! The button one is my favorite! It would look so pretty on my Mama tree!
